The Salt Shakers

I keep hearing my son in my mind, “write it, mom!”  So here goes…

When I got back from vacation, I couldn’t find the salt.  We had two salt shakers and they weren’t anything special.  My husband had bought them and they looked like the kind you find on the table at a cheesy diner!  You know the kind, salt and pepper shaker with a sugar dispenser you can pour from, right?  Well I had salt in both since I use pepper grinders and I knew they were there when I left.  Everyone in the family remembered seeing them.  They were always either on the table, on a shelf next to the table, or on my spice shelf.  We looked all over and they were nowhere to be found.

I called my friend who had stayed in my house for 3 weeks while I was gone.  I had noticed she had out a quart jar that I stored my back up salt in, which seemed strange.  “I never saw them.” She said.  All the weirder as we knew they were there when we left.

Weeks passed with everyone in the house keeping their eyes open for those salt shakers with no sign of them.

Then, one day at breakfast, I turned around to that shelf next to the table to grab my morning vitamins and low and behold, there were the salt shakers!!  Both of them, lined up on the right edge of the shelf!  Each morning for about 3 weeks I had been looking in that exact spot, grabbing my vitamins, yet those salt shakers had not been there.  Others in the house had looked in that spot and had not seen the salt.  Now, all of a sudden, they had reappeared!!

I remember, a few hours later, it crossed my mind, “I wonder if Shaw-heen was playing a trick on me, taking them and then putting them back.”  At that thought I suddenly have an image in my head of my son in a funny outfit from maybe the 1700’s.  He’s wearing a cap, that snaps down on the bill, knickers, and a vest over a long-sleeved shirt.  The vest and knickers were in a black and white herringbone, I think.  I can’t imagine this outfit on my son.  He was very fashionable.  In this image, he touches his cap, kind of curtsies, and smiles at me in a knowing way.  Then I sense him saying, “Ha!!  You finally figured it out!!”  He is clearly laughing at me.
