Last night while I was reading “Moments of Grace” by Neale Donald Walsh, I realized I have had an experience when Spirit spoke to me so my ears could hear. Neale said he wrote the book to help people understand that God/Goddess speaks to everyone, not just him. Not all of us listen or realize it when it happens.
My second eldest son is 30 now and this story goes back to when he was just barely 3 years old. At the time, I was married to his father, who was an atheist and I was leaning in the direction of being an atheist myself.
We were living in Finland at the time, a Lutheran state, but my exposure to anything spiritual was completely non-existent. My husband at the time was an alcoholic and his idea of fun was to get together with friends, play cards, and get hammered. I wasn’t a drinker so watching this took a toll on me. I was having a hard time, being in a foreign country and realizing that I had married an alcoholic who didn’t want to return to my country.
I had two children at the time, a 9-year-old and my toddler turning 3. His big brother was out playing with friends and my son was walking away from me down the hall toward the living room. He turned toward me and, in a very grown-up voice that sounded nothing like him, said, “There is a God.” He emphasized the ‘is’ in the sentence. I looked at him, surprised, and I don’t think I said anything. I think I just blew it off as weird. It’s a shame I didn’t take it seriously because it could have given me a lot of support to recognize there was a spirit world then.
In recent years, as I have become spiritual, I have had numerous experiences when Spirit speaks to me. Spirit often speaks through my deceased son and I realize that Spirit was speaking to me through my toddler 27 years ago and I wasn’t listening. I’m listening now. I look back on that day with fondness, realizing that Spirit was trying to get my attention when I needed it.
